I stumbled on this still from "A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving." The clip embedded below shows the scene. Fast forward to two minutes in. Sure enough, Charlie Brown and his pals make Franklin sit by himself:

Why did The Peanuts make the black kid sit by himself at Thanksgiving?

I would've sat in the same place.
ReplyDeletebeach chairs are way more comfortable and I hate being close to clumsy people when eating.
it makes MY eating experience better and prevents any stain on my clothes.
I don't see anything wrong.
Franklin's a smart guy.
LMAO @ above comment! at first i looked at the clip n i was like WTF cuz Franklin is my favorite (yes becuz he's the only black kid) but now that i saw the above comment it just made my day. Go Franklin!
ReplyDeletewhat makes you think Franklin even wanted to sit with those crazy little crackers?
ReplyDeleteWe can't personify a cartoon character by giving it decision making. Franklin did not sit there by choice, but was placed there by the cartoonist. The real question for me is what was the cartoonist thinking?
ReplyDeleteI don't think the cartoonist was thinking anything along the lines of racism. Sometimes things are done and people read too much into it. Plus Franklin is such a cute character, the cartoonist must have taken his time creating him!!!!!
ReplyDeleteI'm more concerned that Peppermint Patty and her lesbian girlfriend Marci were not seated next to each other when it's obvious they are a same-sex couple.
ReplyDeleteI think people look to much in to things to find some kind of racism. This was just a cute Cartoon. And Frankin was a cute kid cartoon character. I didnt even think anything of him sitting alone, Maybe some of the other kids where going to show up and didnt and he just happen to sit there. Why isnt Charlie sitting at the head of the table? and why are they only eating dessert, why are they always having dinner things outside? And for the last one, If the cartoonist was at all racist he wouldnt have made Frankin..
ReplyDeleteI don't know about racism I've always loved Peanuts. Nobody noticed that there were chairs sitting next to Franklin then all of a sudden they disappeared. I agree with Anonymous if there was racism involved Franklin would not exist.
ReplyDeleteseriously people!? take a sociology course please! symbolic interactionists look at this and see glaring messages. perhaps the cartoonist isnt racist... but there is something being said ABOUT racism here for sure. our social media is a well thought out process and they DO NOT accidentally place things into their pictures or films. these types of things for social norms and stereotypes in society causing us to act and be who we are (which is why americans can relate to thxgiving dinner and other people can't... it is a social norm). if we constantly see images associating a race or gender with a specific idea (segregation being the above...) we begin to treat it as normal.
ReplyDeletewhen we treat these images as normal we are just accepting the message. please dont be passive enough to let things like this slide.
also this cartoon is kinda old making it exist during a slightly different era of norms and values. racism was on its way out or deeply embedded in the generations that created or first experienced this clip.
anonymous = white 22 year old college kid (i am the sum of my experiences and so are you. we dont live in a vacuum... so dont act like it please)
He has a point. That's the same chair snoopy fought when he was setting up the table!
