Digikyoe - a fusion of classic and modern Japanese imagery



Reader Jeff Mitchell brought his artwork to my attention. He calls his illustrations "Digikyoe":

Digikyoe is an adaptation of "Ukyoe, meaning "floating world," which refers to the impetuous young culture that bloomed in the urban centers of Edo (modern-day Tokyo), Osaka, and Kyoto. It is also an ironic allusion to the homophonic term for "Sorrowful World," the earthly plane of death and rebirth from which Buddhists sought release."
