Don't waste your time on the the new role-playing game being promoted at Penny Arcade

Today at Penny Arcade, Tycho promoted a role-playing game called Eschalon, Book I. I downloaded the demo and spent about 20 minutes with it. The game's graphics are ten years out of date (and not remotely appealing), and the story and setting are equally cliched. The final straw was that when I clicked on an item, my character didn't automatically walk toward it. Move along.

If you're looking for a free game to play, then try one of these.

  1. You should see nethack - the graphics are 30 years old (and some of the original developers have died of old age). Controls are impossible to learn. Yet it's a hilarious game :)

  2. Yeah, bad graphics are tolerable, weak story I can live with, lame controls don't have to be a dealbreaker. But add all three together, with no compensating factor and you have a demo that thoroughly convinced me to not buy the game and not bother downloading the next game PA promotes, either.

  3. Ok, I rushed to the rescue without even trying the game. Maybe it's really bad, but I have to try myself. No offence )

  4. Best site I found so far with good suggestions for games is Play This Thing. It was initially built as a promotion site for Manifesto Games, but the games proposed are really a good mix of freeware and shareware. Quite a few gameplay and story gems.

  5. The graphics look great to me. But then, I'm a fan of abandonware AND amateur games, so I guess I'm used to "outdated".

Isometric games usually drive me nuts, though.

  6. I'm just wondering how long you really played the game since it's seems you got fed up with the controls so how do you know the story is all that cliched? And to write off PA completely because you didn't share enthusiasm over one game?
I don't really agree with how cool you think certain items are that you post on your site but I still come back for the stuff I do enjoy. You can't please everybody.

  7. Like I said in the post - - 20 minutes, and I saw no reason to think it was going to improve any time soon. Playing games should be fun, not a job where you have to endure until you get to the fun part. Especially when, like me, your free time is extremely limited.

I'm not writing off PA - - I love PA. I'm writing off the outside games they pimp until I read a respected, positive review.
