Apparently, during the Black Death, many physicians wore a mask in the shape of a bird's head. Hence, this bird-shaped Plague Doctor Mask by Bob Basset. It's on sale at eBay.

Probably this most disturbing thing I have seen this week. Including next week. Imagine that was the last thing you saw before dying?!
ReplyDeleteJames, if you wanna know really crazy. The whole design was simply a way of reminding doctors and keeping patients from getting to close.
ReplyDeleteDistant and spooky. The traditional carnival masks with long noses where based on this idea as well.
the long nose used to stuff inside some spices cause at that time they considered them useful to avoid air contaminated. Another peculiar thing was big glasses to protect the eyes and long gloves and a little staff to move sheets and people in beds.
