This is my dad's favorite painting in the world. It's in the Museum of Fine Art in Boston and as kids he'd take us to the museum and just stare at this painting for a solid 20 minutes. Memories! To this day, it's one of the only paintings from the MFA that's left a lasting impression.
The guy in the water actually survived, minus a leg, and went on to become Lord Mayor of London. a couple of decades ago I did a reproduction in colored pencil on matte board, but with a more realistic shark. Turned out well and I still have it.
I've long admired this painting but after seeing it again I think it's actually Lucius Malfoy who's about to become sharkbait.
I saw it in a magazine promoting a show at museum. I don't think I'd ever seen it before.
As a kid, because the guy in the water had such long hair, I always thought it was a naked woman. I didn't boobs back then I guess- maybe I thought he/she was really flat.
