3. I really enjoyed the first book of Suzanne Collins's The Hunger Games trilogy. Imagine Stephen King's The Running Man, if the hero had been a teenage girl who didn't realize how pretty she was. $9 at Amazon.

  1. I also enjoyed the first book a great deal as well, John. The pacing was great, the main characters were engaging, and the world-building was effective. I really looked forward to the second one, but for 90% of it, I felt like it was more or less a repeat of Book 1. Which is not a terrible thing, but it wasn't exactly a new, fresh read in the way the first one was. It felt like a lot of the same. The ending of that book was nicely done, though, and I held out a lot of expectations for the third and last one in the series. It was also disappointing, though at least it broke from the formula of the first two. The writing just felt very rushed, and some of the plot decisions really left me scratching my head and/or feeling manipulated.
I wish you would write longer reviews of the things you read or play with. Not epic-length, but a few paragraphs would be nice.

  2. Just finished the Hunger Games myself last week - in one sitting. I think that's probably the highest praise I can give a book. It's a shame to hear from words that the next 2 aren't as well written, but I'm sure I'll read them eventually anyway.
