There's hundreds of comments at Reddit if you're in the mood for more analysis of the movie.*Buy Inception spinning tops at eBay.
I've read this somewhere else online as well. It's an interesting theory and it begs the question: Why does he keep spinning the top totem throughout the movie? What is he trying to gauge if he knows he's already dreaming/not dreaming? Is he looking to see if he's in Mal's dreams?
I noticed that in my first viewing (though the Imax helped). It was reinforced when he stated that once someone knows your totem it is useless. However, I still didn't know if it was the real world and the ring thing was a red herring, because when he was in the dream state he was still married due to guilt (and had his ring on because he wanted desperately to hold on to her), then at the end of the film he gets over her and lets her go (thus no ring, instadivorce). Then I got a headache.
