Wreck-It Ralph and Paperman are terrific

Wreck-It Ralph is wonderful.  Calling it a great video game movie sells it way too short.  Solid story, and excellent character design.  The villain is particularly cool, in all of his forms.  Don't be misled by the ad campaign, the famous video game characters play only a very small role.  Other than one scene (which is really the weakest in the movie) and characters in the background, it almost entirely features characters and locations designed for this movie.  Relatedly, there's a new and improved Wreck-It Ralph game available at iTunes. (The illustration is by Clio Chang, who storyboarded the charming Paperman short, which put a nice lump in my throat.)

  1. I saw a prescreening back in early October and loved it sooooo much! I've been waiting for it to come out so I could grab some popcorn and see it again!!!

  2. After a decade of pretending that the Pixar shorts are more entertaining and emotionally engaging than they really are, it was WONDERFUL to finally see a pre-feature short that KILLED. Paperman has it all - a super stylish look, perky pace, charm galore, and H-E-A-R-T to spare.

  3. Paperman is perfect. There is not a single thing about it to complain about - except perhaps that it isn't longer.

Wreck-It Ralph is not AS perfect, but it's a damn solid film; and much more solid a flick than Brave (and I liked Brave!). Awesome outing for Disney - has me excited that they're finally on the right track! Hopefully they can keep up the momentum.

  4. The one thing that bugged me during Paperman was that she looks like a model, but he has a giant nose. Same thing in Wreck-It Ralph - - bombshell woman + essentially a midget.
