Link roundup

1.  Cautiously optimistic about JJ Abrams directing Star Wars.  Star Trek's plot was horrendous, and the monsters in Star Trek, Cloverfield, and Super 8 were all terrible.

2.  Dishonored as a text adventure.

3.  eBay banned auctions of NECA's Django dolls.

  1. I'm just curious: If the story in his last film was horrendous, and the monsters in his last three films were terrible, why are you even cautiously optimistic?

    1. Characters were great in Star Trek. Super 8 was really good aside from the monster.

Hiring him for Star Wars is like guaranteeing it'll be a B+ at best and a B- at worst.

  2. I think it guarantees that the new Star Wars will at least be interesting and not bland Disney-family pap. Abrams may go around in circles on his plotting, but he does always throw in a nice surprise or twist in what he does, and he is good at letting characters happen naturally. Star Wars works best when it doesn't try hard to be funny or clever.

    1. Yes, his characters are almost always fabulous. Hopefully Arndt's plot will be great.

  3. If we are talking contemporary I would have liked to see Jon Favreau do a Star Wars. That or go it a completely different direction like the Coen Brothers, Matthew Vaughn or Tarantino.

    1. Jesus, man, what ARE you a fan of? Iron Man 1 is a thing of beauty. Someone finally did a brawler super-hero movie right... it's not perfect, but look at the source material. It has the requisite flawed Marvel hero, who goes on the journey to redeem himself, and in the process takes down the bad guy with the appropriate amount of property damage.

      What's not to like?

    2. Very slow. 30 min too long at least. Robert Downey's really good though.
