"I have no excuse, I was not in special forces."

The secretary of Veterans Affairs apologized Tuesday after reports surfaced that he falsely claimed earlier this year that he was part of U.S. special operations forces during his time in the military.

McDonald, a former corporate executive who took over the agency last June amid scandal, said he reacted “spontaneously” and “wrongly” during the exchange, and the administration has accepted his apology.
