If all this talk has you interested in The Dark Tower series

I'd recommend starting with book four, Wizard and Glass--the first 100 pages or so are the proper ending to book 3 and should be skipped until you read the books in order, but the rest is a flashback to the hero's youth and an excellent introduction to the series. Salem's Lot is also essentially The Dark Tower book 5(a) and a good introduction to King's writing.

If I had to describe the books, I'd say imagine if Lord of the Rings featured Clint Eastwood's character from Unforgiven, the setting was post-apocalyptic, and the heroes regularly encountered places and characters from other King novels.
