Today's news and jokes

I’m barely exaggerating when I say that in this series of cat photos, this guy has provided a deeper glimpse of life for US troops at the last FOBs of the GWOT—Tanf and Shaddadi in Syria, Baledogle etc in Somalia—then the Pentagon has allowed the American press/public to have over the past 5-8 yrs

("The loss of the second mission could lead NASA to rethink its plans to use a larger Ispace-designed lander for a mission to take science experiments to the far side of the moon. That mission, led by Draper Laboratory of Cambridge, Mass., is part of the space agency’s efforts to tap into entrepreneurial companies for cheaper moon missions. It is currently scheduled for 2027.")

NYT

("A man described by law enforcement as one of Southern California’s most prominent street racing influencers has been charged by Los Angeles County prosecutors with 16 counts of conspiracy for allegedly organizing a number of so-called street takeovers")

the replies of the author ("This is insane", "It is very very disturbing that your response is always to lie," "why would you lie?") are just creating a roleplay scenario in which ChatGPT is a malicious social actor of equal standing to the user. this is incorrect and unhelpful - pure critihype

I remember sitting with my mom at the kitchen table, looking up an address in the big road atlas book and planning a driving route… it was kind of fun, like you had to do a sudoku every time you wanted to go somewhere

once, back before i had a smartphone, i got lost while driving. i drove around and eventually found train tracks and was able to follow them until i was back on familiar roads. having a gps would have denied me that emergent gameplay experience

An actual question I have is whether Tom Cruise has recorded a video, stored with his lawyers to be played upon his death, where he tells the world that yes, actually, he DOES want everyone to go see the movie with the stunt that killed him.

(Not fact-checking this) (OKC such a collection of frontrunners reliant on favorable foul calls, always in huge trouble if they're not up 20 for crunch time)

I once inserted a chase scene into a screenplay I was writing in which the person being chased was wearing Dr Martens that hadn't yet been broken in, so that every step was agony.
