Today's news and jokes

good: richmond's public school superintendent promised to dye his hair blue if a hs achieved 100% graduation, which they did! bad: a brawl broke out at the ceremony that required police intervention to break up. good: nobody was killed or seriously injured, and it yielded a ~truly absurd~ photo.

Glow in the dark Exit 8 prints

Refreshing to see a post so prominently credit the artist for a cover (by comparison, Games Workshop covers just manifest from the ether):

The new Empire covers are loose! 🕷️ Inside the making of Spider-Man: Brand New Day—featuring … everyone. Writing this was an absolute blast, and the designers made both the newsstand and the subscriber special look, well, amazing. Hope you Spidey fans enjoy.❤️ @empiremagazine.bsky.social

The artist has some great prints in his shop (but unfortunately isn't shipping to the USA right now for obvious reasons):

I would be remiss not to point out that "Tricking Milli Vanilli into performing a concert for a dictator" is LITERALLY a storyline from the 1990s 'Super Mario Bros 3' cartoon 🙃

For those wanting to convert videos to GIFs, Gifski is free and can now help you edit and even crop videos, and it makes some pretty nice ones with little difficulty.

"Craig Newmark explains why he’s pulling back on funding journalism" (from January)

From an interview at NiemanLab (also discussing what he views as successful projects):

I really didn’t understand that audience development and related marketing needed to be a really big deal for everyone in journalism, and didn’t understand that very few really good journalists were aware of that, but I’ve started discussing that in maybe every engagement.

Also, I’ve only recently understood the danger, reputationally and otherwise, that effective journalists face, but I’ve started discussing that in maybe every engagement. I’m still directing some resources to real efforts to keep them safe.

Free 3D-printable Warhammer 40K Gunship transport

Painted up my MK1 Thunderhawk Transporter in Lamenters colours. The paint has already slightly chipped on the Rhino's roof from playing with the magnetised cargo but oh well, it'll spend most its time on a stand anyway. Painted mini number 33 of 2026 (counting it as one since they share a base).

Clever use of magnets lets it pick up the rhino.

CIA officer arrested and found to have 300 gold bars worth more than $40 million in his home

NBC:

applied to work with the government three times; in his first application, he said he graduated from Clemson University in 2000. In his second application, he added that he had a graduate degree from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.

On his third try, in 2009, he succeeded, and he included those degrees and an aircraft test from the U.S. Naval Test Pilot School, according to court documents. In applications for promotions, he said he’d been a thesis adviser at the Air Force Institute of Technology. [He] also told employers he was a pilot for the Navy.

None of it was true

Orange Cassidy with a good t-shirt

A whale got stranded off the German coast, and then social media influencers took over the rescue efforts

NYT:

The early rescue teams, blessed by the local government, were stocked with the sort of experts you’d expect to try to guide a lost whale back to its home: firefighters, coastal police officers, veterinarians and nonprofit groups that work in animal rescue.

...

Many in the crowd expressed deep distrust of the experts on the initial government-backed rescue teams, not to mention the local politicians.

Tabloids and TikTok fed their anger.

...

They grew attached to main characters from the saga. One was ...a charming biologist who fashioned himself as a social media whale-fluencer.

...

“He was literally sticking his face in the water next to the whale, like making noises”

(It doesn't end well)
