When the game designer and concept artist make each other better (art roundup)

🧵This Molyneux quote has filled me with existential dread ever since I read it. It reminds me of one of my favorite collaborative moments working with @threeohfour.bsky.social. We were about 1/3 through Unavowed production. I asked him if he could animate some kind of idle animation for Eli.

My suggestion was "How about he juggle fire balls or something?" Ben could've just said yes and done that, but he pushed back. He said "I think that's a bit clownish, honestly? Lemme try something else." So he took a day and came back with this:

This was so frigging awesome. But when I asked him "What exactly is he doing?" He said "I dunno. I just think it looks cool." No question about that! Buuuut as the game's writer/designer, I felt like I had to justify this cool animation in some way. It couldn't be cool for cool's sake.
