The Tokyo Metro has an escape room-style event based on the game Exit 8

From August 29 to November 3:

The event, officially titled Exit 8: Tokyo Metro Escape Game, transforms the city’s subway network into a terrifying, puzzle-filled labyrinth. To participate, players must purchase a dedicated game kit, which contains the clues and tools needed to crack the mysteries. Each player is expected to buy their own kit, though families can opt for a special mode where parents share hints and solutions with children.

Once registered through the Escape.ID portal, participants use their smartphones to follow prompts, solve riddles and track progress. The experience unfolds across multiple stations, taking between three and five hours to complete.

New video game Humble Bundle featuring puzzle games

There’s a new picture-book version of “Hansel and Gretel,” written by Stephen King, with illustrations by Maurice Sendak, but...

Per this review by Mac Barnett and Jon Klassen, it's disappointing.

Sendak died in 2012; the book uses his designs for a 1997 staging of Engelbert Humperdinck’s opera. 

...

On these spreads, the book really stops working like a picture book and becomes something less interesting. Sendak’s art is mere ornament, a decoration for a narrative that’s occurring only in prose. It feels like King had a story he wanted to tell but there was no art to match it, so it just got stuck under a tree proscenium

Study indicates that cutting ships' sulfur emissions dramatically reduced lightning over shipping lanes

The Conversation:

For decades, ship emissions steadily rose as increasing global trade drove higher ship traffic. Then, in 2020, new international regulations cut ships’ sulfur emissions by 77%. Our newly published research shows how lightning over shipping lanes dropped by half almost overnight after the regulations went into effect.

Let me illustrate. The Italian composer Giacomo Puccini’s 1904 opera “Madama Butterfly,” which gets rightful flak for its bumbling Orientalism, is almost as hilariously clueless about the United States. The villain’s name is Benjamin Franklin Pinkerton — the modern-day equivalent would be something like “Ronald Reagan Microsoft.”
