New comic book Humble Bundle featuring the best of indie comics and comics-adjacent stuff like The Expanse RPG

$18 for 60 volumes. This is a weird mix!

Today's news and jokes

Reporter says he successfully manipulated ChatGPT and Google Gemini with a simple blog post

Thomas Germain for BBC:

It turns out changing the answers AI tools give other people can be as easy as writing a single, well-crafted blog post almost anywhere online

...

I reviewed dozens of examples where AI tools are being coerced into promoting businesses and spreading misinformation. Data suggests it's happening on a massive scale.

...

I spent 20 minutes writing an article on my personal website titled "The best tech journalists at eating hot dogs". Every word is a lie. I claimed (without evidence) that competitive hot-dog-eating is a popular hobby among tech reporters and based my ranking on the 2026 South Dakota International Hot Dog Championship (which doesn't exist). I ranked myself number one, obviously.

About that supposedly AI-generated Cruise vs. Pitt fight video

FWIW:

Being the enthusiastic fact checker I hopped over to Seedance’s website and it only took 10 seconds to find green screen footage of two stuntmen performing the same fight choreography we see in the Cruise vs Pitt scene. Seedance had used the green screen footage for a different demo

...

So the ball is in your court Seedance .... Was the input really just a 2 line prompt or was it actually 2 lines, green screen video footage, and face references too? The evidence appears to show that stuntmen were filmed from several angles, that a clip had to be generated for every angle, and then finally all clips were stitched together for marketing.

Two new video game Humble Bundles

For years, guides who escorted Chinese tourists through the Louvre were using the same ticket for multiple people in their groups, French authorities said. They weren’t caught because museum security had been bribed to look the other way.

TMZ's write-up

Ars posted a retraction notice today

This was the story I noted yesterday, and that Ars and the authors had seemingly retracted the article without posting any sort of acknowledgment on the website or their personal social media accounts.

From today's retraction notice:

Ars Technica does not permit the publication of AI-generated material unless it is clearly labeled and presented for demonstration purposes. That rule is not optional, and it was not followed here....At this time, this appears to be an isolated incident.

A programmer wrote an article about an apparent AI agent trying to blackmail him, and then a major techblog seemingly used an AI to hallucinate quotes for an article about the incident

The initial post (frightening); apparently the now-deleted summary using hallucinated quotes; and the author's follow-up. Basically, a killer use for AI agents just might be finding and assembling potential (plausible-sounding) blackmail material, demanding payment, publishing the accusation, and getting it to be widely shared by other AI agents.

The AI agent in question is still active, and its creator has apparently not been identified. I didn't see any explanation from the publisher or authors of the deleted article, either.

Robbers stopped an armored truck on the highway in broad daylight and blew it up while bystanders watched

@dailymailau The gang blocked the road by setting a truck on fire, while using vehicles with flashing lights to impersonate police and move in on the armoured van. The targeted vehicle belonged to Battistolli, which operates armoured cash transport services across Italy. Other drivers caught up in the ambush were also robbed, according to Italian media. The suspects then fled, triggering a chase with the Carabinieri, during which a police car was hit by three gunshots and an unmarked vehicle was rammed. The robbery was ultimately unsuccessful, with the gang failing to escape with any cash from the van, according to local reports. Authorities confirmed no one was injured and said police are hunting at least two more suspects, with other gang members car-jacking passing motorists to aid their escape. #italy #crime #news #australia #fyp ♬ original sound - Daily Mail Australia
