Mountaineers violated "climbing ethics" by dosing themselves with xenon gas to make it easier to climb Mt. Everest

Long article (that questions whether the gas even does anything meaningful):

The British group, which included four former special forces members, took a different approach.

About 10 weeks before the expedition, the men began sleeping in hypoxic tents, which lower oxygen levels in the air and gradually acclimatized the hikers to conditions on Mount Everest, [the organizer] said.

While hypoxic tents have been used by some climbers for years, the big innovation for the British expedition came two weeks before the excursion, when the men flew to Limburg, Germany, outside Frankfurt, where a doctor ... had been experimenting with inhaled gases in his clinic.

The men wore masks hooked up to ventilators as an anesthesiologist slowly introduced higher levels of xenon into their systems.

Bubble protest in New Orleans after man complains about potential damage to his Porsche

NOLA:

Earlier this week, [a man] went on WGNO and threatened to sue [a French Quarter bar], arguing a stray bubble from the bar’s delightful bubble machine could get in his porch cocktail.

[He's] also worried about his Porsche SUV that he parks across from the bar on St. Phillip

"Skies of Thunder: The Deadly World War II Mission Over the Roof of the World" is $1.99 right now

at Amazon. (It's been on my wishlist)

From the NYT review:
Demeaned as “Hump drivers,” ostensible noncombatants at the bottom of the aviation hierarchy, they flew an inadequately charted route over baffling terrain, its surreality intensified by their frequent refusal to wear oxygen masks.

The popcorn bucket for Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning requires use of the fancy key to The Entity

Good poster concept, too:

I looked up to see if there was a post credits scene and the first result was an AI article that said yes (it was wrong) so chalk up another one for the Entity

New Humble Bundle features comics written by Brian Michael Bendis

Starts at $1 for two volumes, including one illustrated by Alex Maleev.

Folio Society made a deluxe illustrated edition of The Culture novel Use of Weapons

Lots of illustrations posted here. The cover should have been the simple chair that inexplicably sets him off.

The Wikipedia entry for the book says, "According to Banks, he wrote a much longer version of the book in 1974, long before any of his books (science fiction or otherwise) were published. The book had an even more complicated structure ('It was impossible to comprehend without thinking in six dimensions')"

(My favorite Culture novel is Matter, but this one is good too)

The Devil and Sherlock Holmes is $1.99 right now

at Amazon (been on my wishlist forever). ("In the course of researching the book, I got to know an array of astonishing characters. They include a marine biologist named Steve O’Shea who was trying to be the first person to ever to capture a giant squid and grow it in captivity; sandhogs digging an intricate maze of tunnels hundreds of feet beneath the streets of New York City; a Polish detective investigating whether an author planted clues to an actual murder in his postmodern novel...")

There's a free Warhammer 40K typing game called Boltgun - Words of Vengeance

Good concept for a Star Wars storyline

My 'similar energy' Star Wars concept has always been to follow the crew of a single rebel capital ship (maybe a Neb-B cruiser) through the OT-era, beginning with a mutiny, so the crew is a mix of Imperial officers-turned-rebels and new rebel recruits, with the drama that implies.

— "Online Rent-a-Sage" Bret Devereaux (@bretdevereaux.bsky.social) May 12, 2025 at 5:57 PM

My own twist on it is for most of the series, a hero-ship Nebulon B is going to have to run away from Star Destroyers a lot, but you could make the show's Neb-B be the one we see in the Battle of Endor in RotJ in desperation going broadside to broadside with an ISD as the big series climax.

— "Online Rent-a-Sage" Bret Devereaux (@bretdevereaux.bsky.social) May 12, 2025 at 6:00 PM

So you get to spend, like, 3-4 seasons establishing that the hero ship can Do Stuff, but Star Destroyers are big and scary and require running away, only to end up - after all of your character development - squaring off against one in a badass moment of valor.

Or...

A Star Destroyer glides amongst the glittering firmament, when suddenly two giant space logs swing down from each side and smash it. The Yubnub song swells and the yellow text begins to scroll into the distance.
