Pitbull's yell is now a trademarked sound

Billboard:
For context, sound trademarks are extremely rare. According to [a law review article], there are more than 2.6 million active trademark registrations in the United States. Of those, there are only about 250 active sensory trademark registrations. Of those, about 234 are sound trademarks, and of those, about 36 are "familiar sounds," or sounds without words, yet associated with a particular good or service.

To obtain Pitbull’s grito trademark, his legal team had to persuade the USPTO that his yell is so closely associated with the artist, that even if his name is not uttered, or he isn't present, people automatically think it's him.

...

At least part of the motivation behind trademarking “EEEEEEEYOOOOOO” stems from a similar grito heard in J Balvin and Willy William’s hit “Mi Gente.”
Miami Herald:
The article defines a grito as “a loud shout of joy or excitement that is commonly associated with Mexican culture,” one Pitbull started using as early as 2002 in Miami clubs (to alert his friends that trouble might be escalating).

Madeline Miller interview at Vox

Compare and contrast the lesson they emphasize from The Odyssey:
Ezra Klein
Something I always find very affecting about the Odysseus story is that homecoming isn’t great. He spends all these years trying to get home, but in the end, it’s tragic anyway.

I think that speaks to the idea that you can spend all your life trying to achieve this one thing, and you think when you have it, you’ll be happy. But then the person you became to achieve it means you’re a person who can no longer be happy with it. You become so good at striving that even once you have achieved your goal, you can’t stop striving — and you just become more and more dissatisfied.

That bit of tragedy has always struck me as deeply wise.

Madeline Miller
Absolutely. Odysseus comes home, and I think he experiences both this sort of rush of being home but also alienation and dislocation. I always think about how sad it is that he misses his son’s entire childhood and young adulthood. When he leaves, his son is an infant and when he comes back, his son is 21. He’s missed out on all those years of his marriage. His mother has died while he was away. His father has gotten quite old and infirm.

So now, you’re back with the people you love, but can you connect with them? Odysseus was honored as “best of the Greeks,” the man who was the architect of the fall of Troy, who was honored and treated as this almost God on Earth. Then he was thrown from that into these years of suffering and then brought home again to a place completely different than the one he left. So I think it makes sense to me why he kind of loses it at the end.

"Welcome to Hawaii. Here’s your ankle monitor"

HNN:
State Attorney General Clare Connors is considering the legality of using tracking devices to ensure tourists are following the rules of the 14-day, mandatory quarantine.

Connors told members of the state Senate Special Committee on COVID-19 that some of the ideas being proposed to track visitors could pose constitutional questions and she is exploring those concerns.
SA:
On March 26, Hawaii became the country’s first state to implement a mandatory 14-day self-quarantine order for incoming travelers, which was extended to interisland travelers on April 1.

...

Prior to COVID-19 lockdowns, the state was welcoming close to 30,000 passengers a day. In April 2019, 856,250 visitors came to Hawaii.

In the 29 days since the quarantine began, only 3,644 trans-Pacific visitors, or roughly 126 per day, came to the state.

When an elephant seal moves into your yard

A teacher living in a beachfront home in Washington state:
“I was lesson planning on my computer, and I looked out the window, and there was a giant elephant seal kind of coming towards the house.”
...

“I got on the horn with [Fish and Wildlife], and he immediately knew who she was. She has three tags on her flippers, [but] he didn’t have to ID them. He goes, ‘I’ll bet you anything that’s Elsie May’”
Watch her slobber up the patio door:

And nap in the yard:

"Former FBI agent charged with pocketing bribes from organized crime figure"

LAT:
In September 2014, at the Grand Havana cigar lounge in Beverly Hills, [the agent] met a lawyer who noticed the agent had expensive tastes. Seeing [the agent] was wearing a gold Rolex and sported a Gucci belt, the lawyer later told investigators he saw “an opportunity to recruit” the agent, the affidavit said.
