I sure hope they restock these Buffalo Bills hats

The base hat with the fabulous logo was sold out in the spots I looked. The first modified version is up for bid. (LOL Ravens.)

Update: Dick's still has them

Fabulous podcast by Pablo Torre about what sounds like blatant corruption in the NBA, plus speculation for how the Clippers might try to get away with it

The latest episode of Pablo Torre Finds Out is around 90 minutes long, and features terrific storytelling about what seems like a nesting doll of corruption and criminality in politics, sports, and greenwashing.

Here's a thoughtful response from Dame Lillard's manager (he's posted additional thoughts):

And coincidentally, a new article I saw today (she's tweeted additional examples):

Finally, is this tee available yet?

The Dodgers should be shamed by the ambition of Mets broadcasts

There was a narrative reason for the slick transition:
As [Mets hitter Francisco Lindor] prepared for the first pitch, he stepped out of the batter’s box and turned to the umpire, gesturing to his eyes. Pitchers and hitters must establish eye contact during an at-bat, and Lindor didn’t feel like he was getting that from Lucchesi.

"In Dallas, the Stars spent decades turning what was once seen as a community good into a lucrative arm of their for-profit enterprise"

USA Today:

At a time of increasing commercialization of youth sports nationally, hockey is particularly vulnerable to capture by corporate interests.

...

The Stars capitalized on that dynamic by building an ice empire. They convinced seven local municipalities to spend tens of millions of taxpayer dollars building rinks that the Stars run and profit from. Their ownership group bought up three more. Along the way, at least eight other independent ice hockey rinks went out of business. Now, every level of amateur hockey in North Texas from preschoolers to adults runs through the state’s NHL team.

...

the Stars impose their will by reminding parents that they can block the pathway for any kid.

Remarkable article. Venomous. One damning sentence after another.

(There's a tikok too):

@usatoday

Ice is power in the lucrative world of youth hockey. In North Texas, the Dallas Stars control almost all of it. A USA TODAY investigation reveals how a $2 billion NHL team has turned what was once seen as a community good into a lucrative arm of its for-profit enterprise.

Funny story about a rookie Formula 1 driver deciding to break a kart record on a track he stumbled upon while on vacation

He was vacationing with his girlfriend's family, and they challenged him to break the record
After struggling to beat the record for hours, he took fuel out of the car, treated the engine with a leaf blower to try and cool it down, and enlisted his girlfriend's help to take care of the tyres
...
"Someone was slipstreaming me on the straights and then moving out of the way at the last minute so I could do the lap. I went with normal clothes, but I made sure to have shorts and a thin t-shirt on to keep the weight down. And even on the straights, I was head down.

A 2023 article about the hiring of the NFLPA leader who just resigned in disgrace

Jim Trotter for The Athletic:

[He] may well be the person to take the union wherever it wants to go, but the players will have no one to blame but themselves if he fails. Through apathy and/or blind trust, they allowed union president [] to drive a selection process unlike any that had ever preceded it.

...

Whatever the reason, it helps explains how you get a selection process like we just witnessed. As far back as March, players were privately expressing concerns to me about what was taking place. The expectation then was that a vote would take place that month at the union meeting in Hawaii. When it didn’t happen, some players essentially checked out and left the process to [the union president] and the executive committee — which makes the scheduling of this week’s vote more curious.

[The union president] spent eight seasons as an NFL offensive lineman. He knows the players get only one time each year to be completely off the books, that from early June to mid-July they schedule family vacations and international travel. So why would he hold a vote at a time when he knows turnout is likely to be low?

ESPN has a new article suggesting he resigned shortly after they started asking him about billing strip club visits to the union.

Dodgers' 6'7" pitching prospect is 17 and, reportedly, already hitting 97mph

Joseph Deng Thon, the 17 yo, 6’7” RHP whom the Dodgers signed out of South Sudan, made his pro debut in the DSL today, tossing a scoreless inning. Weighing in at 185 lbs and already hitting 97, he’ll be an interesting one to follow for sure.

And what with a South Sudanese kid joining the DSL squad, it’s a good time to point out that the Dodger team chefs there make cuisine from the countries their players come from, to help bridge gaps, & to spice up meal times. An indigenous Taiwanese kid in 24, and South Sudanese in 25, just awesome.

A number of Guatemalan fans ran onto the field and one overzealous security guard decided it was her job to blindside deck people. It was, frankly, unnecessary — even if those fans should not be on the field.

Replay of Faith Kipyegon's attempt to day to break the 4-minute mile (with Nike pulling out all the stops to help her)

The effort included developing a 3D printed sports bra using "FlyWeb":
some wearers reported being able to feel airflow on the chest for the first time while running, a sensation made possible by the garment’s open, breathable zones. “Most women have never experienced that while running,” she said. “We don’t even think about it because it’s just not something we’ve ever expected to feel.”
