James Harvey:
I drew this for the Now & Then Project. You have to take a drawing you did as a kid and redraw it the way you’d do it now. Mine is from when I was 7, and is titled “THE ULTIMATE SOLDIER”. It’s a man carrying EVERY WEAPON EVERY INVENTED (read: every weapon I knew off by heart) while wearing a suit of armour and an army helmet. Also there’s a tiny Bart Simpson in the corner with a boombox.

Water resistant pouch looks like a goldfish in a plastic bag. $13 at Amazon.

Finishing Far Cry 4 in less than 15 minutes (by playing the game like a normal person and not an action hero).

The Awl:
Each week, the ᴄᴏɴᴛᴇɴᴛ industry observes a sacred ritual: Together, but not quite in sync, dozens of websites embed and then post the longest segment from John Oliver’s HBO show, Last Week Tonight. That John Oliver’s weekly video(s) will go viral is, at this time, a given. Whether or not the posts that embed those videos will go viral is another matter altogether. Each time around there are winners, losers, and mere participants.

Bills DE Mario William wears red contacts.
I have, as a mind experiment, made a map of what Africa could have looked like in the mid 19th century if Europe had never become a colonizing world power. In order to do this I have tried to construct an alternative historical time-line in which Europe was much harder struck by the plague in the 1350's and never recovered. Therefore African nations would have gotten the opportunity to flourish unhindered.
But the project is really about real historical precolonial African nations, and I have tried to form a map of the most prominent of those that existed between the 15th and mid 19th century, by looking at historical maps like the one found in UNESCO's “A General History of Africa”, linguistic regions and natural boundaries.
