The goofy initial version of Jaws

Check out the goofy shark that graced the first edition of Peter Benchley's Jaws. I wonder if the artist was just not very good, or if he/she was trying to somehow represent the affair that makes up a large chunk of the book. There are copies on sale at eBay. Via.
