What actually happened was, we got to 200ft, noticed the cloud and froze. My coworker and I were still relatively new. Fully trained and certified, plenty experienced to be on the tower, but not fully experienced in the tower industry.
So we called our manager. Cool guy, old time tower dawg, safety first kind of guy.
“Hey man, I don’t think we’re going to be able to finish this one. There’s a whole horde of wasps around the top of the tower”
And in a strangely calming voice he said
“Now I know it’s nuts. But they’re just RF drunk. They fly around the antennas and get a weird buzz. They won’t bother you. Just climb calmly.”
