"U.S. House moves toward creating a St. Francis Dam disaster memorial"

Congress takes action:
Nearly 90 years ago, a giant shudder ripped through the St. Francis Dam near Newhall, sending a 120-foot wall of water toward the sea.

The 54-miles of carnage from Castaic through the Santa Clara River Valley killed 431 residents and washed away 1,200 homes.

This week, the U.S. House voted unanimously on a bill to erect a national memorial. A similar bill may soon be introduced in the Senate.
