Today's news and jokes

I highly recommend going to your most local No Kings if only to find out which of your community’s grandmas have that dawg in them

really hard to imagine a viable opposition campaign strategy that doesn't include wall-to-wall ads running quotes like this

It's going up to $40 billion. USAID's budget last year was $28 billion.

the logical endpoint of "debate me bro" culture right here

("hackers just doxxed hundreds of DHS, ICE, FBI, and DOJ officials")

New: San Franciscans were aghast by Marc Benioff’s hard tight turn. His company, Salesforce, is seeking new contracts with ICE to help it triple its ranks under the Trump administration. www.nytimes.com/2025/10/16/u...

(The internal documents include a five-page memo sent on Aug. 26 that explained how Salesforce is best suited to help the agency with “talent acquisition” to achieve its goal “to nearly triple its work force by hiring 10,000 new officers and agents expeditiously.”)

Wow. Sidney Reid, the DC woman just found not guilty of assaulting an FBI agent, issues a withering and gutsy statement on Trump through her attorneys. "I feel sorry for the prosecutors really, who must be burdened by Trump's irrational and unfounded hatred for his fellow man." It's a must-read:

("[An FBI agent, who was the alleged victim] was the sole witness called by prosecutors and spent more than five hours on the stand across two days. Much of the questioning centered on her text messages following the incident, where she downplayed it and disparaged [the defendant] as a 'libtard.' She didn't turn over additional text message evidence until early Wednesday morning, and in the middle of cross examination, Abe discovered one message was missing.")

This is Johnson saying the GOP Nazis had VIP tickets to Trump's inauguration. As proof there's no reason to be concerned about Nazis in the GOP. What a time to be alive. bsky.app/profile/atru...

(NBC's writeup) (Finally finished Sinners the other day (savoring it on the treadmill), it's great)

“Massive NY tunnel and subway projects still alive,“ “DOT has no plans to end the multibillion-dollar Gateway tunnel and Second Ave Subway projects, an administration official told POLITICO a day after the president said they had been ‘terminated.’” subscriber.politicopro.com/article/2025...

New: Prosecutors in Florida have charged voting machine vendor Smartmatic with corruption in an indictment that previously only charged three of the company's former executives. Smartmatic's machines are used in LA County. This is a breaking story so I'll have more later, but here's my initial piece

UPDATE: Following the firing of the director of the student newspaper, Indiana University has now cut the print edition of the newspaper entirely. www.idsnews.com/article/2025...

Billionaires are always inserting themselves into situations when it is unneeded or unwanted but when their influence could be useful, they aren’t around. Anyway. Mark Cuban is an IU alum. He could fund that student newspaper in perpetuity with pocket change. Or withhold institutional donations.

("Mark Cuban is unhappy with Indiana University's decision to stop printing student newspaper")

We tried the new Live Translation feature that Apple has heavily marketed. It turns out to be optimized for Spanish as spoken in Spain (pop. 49 million) as opposed to Latin America or the Caribbean (663 million), which makes it kind of a disaster to use in the U.S. And that's just one problem. Alas.

The second negative review I've read. This is Apple now, one product after another, emphasizing something that does not work.

phone touchscreen has to be one of the top 10 worst interfaces ever designed and the world keeps pretending otherwise

What's your favorite iOS touch? I think mine is that you can't simply tap text where you want the cursor to appear.

When we write or draw porn or erotica, we get banned from having a bank account and our livelihoods get seized even if we give it away for free. When billionaires steal what we've written or drawn to churn out a slop-approximate of porn, they're allowed to charge for it.

A popular app for organizing reading materials has been updated with integrated AI to do the reading, but they still haven’t fixed the left column being too narrow to read with no option to resize the column or the text
