A tell from the Manhattan Project was that scientists who had been publishing about nuclear fission suddenly stopped publishing. As Justin points out here, the lack of cryptographic results in OpenAI's mathematical breakthrough could itself be a tell. Evidence against it would be if they published a few improvements that aren't massive breakthroughs.

One major reason that Microsoft was using a definition of intelligence borrowed from white supremacist Linda Gottfredson a couple of years back in their AI documentation is that scientific racists are pretty much the only ones out there pretending that intelligence is well defined and understood

Suposedly OpenAI hardly cared about Sora because it was seen as a waste of computeWSJ is reporting that Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei personally called Meta's Alexandr Wang seeking more compute. Meta considered providing chips, then declined. Inside GOOGLE, Demis Hassabis has expressed frustration about Google not allocating enough compute to long-term research. Sergey Brin sometimes overrides the company's formal compute allocation process, redirecting resources toward projects he personally considers important. Google also cut compute allocated to Noam Shazeer's team in favor of another project. Shortly afterward, he left for OpenAI.

i can scrub through a 4hr city council meeting in five mins thanks to YT transcripts but also so can everyone else, and so can an AI slop generator. So this doesn't make my life easier than a reporter in 1999 who went to the city council meeting and wasn't publishing into a fucked up info ecosystem

the goalposts for being an effective or "efficient" person just change with tech advances so there's nothing AI is going to be able to do that is going to be like: wow, now that the robot does my tasks i have infinite time to sit by the pool

Ah, now I get it. I thought the AI catastrophe meant a model escaping its sandbox, launching nukes or hacking the power grid. Turns out it spots the AI debt bubble, shorts its own creators and crashes the financial system with trading bots. The singularity is a margin call. https://t.co/184dJZvhs9
