1. The mock Ted Talk for Prometheus was a clever marketing stunt, but the video itself is incredibly tedious and the flying cameras look stupid. I'm also surprised that the Weyland Industries url doesn't include a sign up option.

On the other hand, I just finished and greatly enjoyed Ultimate Wolverine vs. Hulk, which was written by Damon Lindelof. It's $13 at Amazon (athough I picked it up when it was $6 at Comixology). I mean, this is the second page in the story, and the story keeps the throttle down after that.

2. Work hard in school. Or else.

3. Freakonomics tries to explain why every team missed on Jeremy Lin:

The last team to overlook Lin was the Houston Rockets — they cut Lin back in December. At that time, the point guard the Rockets decided to keep was Jonny Flynn. Back in 2009, Flynn – after posting a 4.7 WS40 at Syracuse in 2008-09 (that is a below average mark) — was the 6th player taken in the NBA draft. As of last December, Flynn had played more than 3,300 minutes in the NBA and again posted below average numbers. Despite all this evidence that Flynn is not an above average basketball player, the Rockets kept Flynn over Lin.

What explain this “Flynnsanity”? Not only do NBA decision-makers focus on the wrong issues on the NBA draft, they also are slow to let these decisions go. A player’s draft position impacts minutes played – even after we control for performance – several years into a player’s career. So it’s not surprising that Flynn – who did not play well in college or in the NBA – was chosen by the Rockets over Lin. Flynn was supposed to be a star in college. He was supposed to be a star when he was drafted. And I am sure, people still believe Flynn may someday be a star in the NBA.

1. Penelope Trunk on why getting divorced, if you have kids, is probably a bad choice for you and your kids. Her comments reminded me of a book excerpt Robin Hanson posted a few days ago:

The alternative to the European Syndrome is to say that your life can have transcendent meaning if it is spent doing important things – raising a family, supporting yourself, being a good friend and good neighbor, learning what you can do well and then doing it as well as you possibly can. Providing the best framework for doing those things is what the American project is all about.

3. Outside magazine:
California’s San Quentin State Prison is home to a ball field where you can take your cuts against convicted felons. This I had to try.
4. Read about the Batman: Year One movie that never was - - directed by Darren Aronofsky and starring Clint Eastwood:
the script strips Bruce Wayne of his status as heir apparent to the Wayne Industries billions, proposing instead that the young Bruce is found in the street after his parents’ murder, and taken in by ‘Big Al’, who runs an auto repair shop with his son, ‘Little Al’. Driven by a desire for vengeance towards a manifest destiny of which he is only dimly aware, young Bruce (of deliberately indeterminate age) toils day and night in the shop, watching the comings and goings of hookers, johns, pimps and corrupt cops at a sleazy East End cathouse across the street
A perfect idea for my just announced art contest.

5. Board game designer Kim Vandenbroucke looks at board games trends from Toy Fair 2012:

Hasbro’s lineup of children’s game and been gender-ized! (yes, I made that word up) Classic games like Candy Land, Twister, Clue and Connect 4 have been redesigned to appeal to one gender. Connect 4 is no longer yellow and blue, now it’s black, gold and red with very masculine packaging. The Connect 4 line extension, Connect 4 Dunk, will have a basketball themed commercial that will target boys. Obviously, with the Battleship movie on the horizon, we all know that Battleship is solidly in the boy’s group of game and that will continue, and Clue will join the ranks of boy’s products with this year’s into Clue Eliminiation. On the other end of the spectrum, Candy Land and Twister are going to be girls’ products. Candy Land Princesses and a new version of Twister Dance featuring Britney Spears were featured in the Hasbro showroom.

I’ll admit that I’m sad to see Connect 4 go to the boys, but I think it will be interesting to see how gender-izing previously gender neutral games will go.
