Los Angeles resident is terrorizing his neighbors with a bunch of train horns

@abc7la The man behind the noise says he has a long-running beef with LAPD's Van Nuys division, and that the loud sirens are his way of getting the department's attention. Read more at the link. #noisecomplaint #trainhorn #vannuys ♬ original sound - ABC7LA

Looks like he was arrested after the local news publicized the story with the video above. (Looks like it's just nw of Victory and Sepulveda in Van Nuys.)

Former Los Angeles Police Officer "arrested on suspicion of home burglaries in area he once patrolled"

LAT (unspecified burglaries in the San Fernando Valley):

[He] resigned from the LAPD and opted to join the department’s reserve officer program in 2022, where he remained until this March when he was charged with insurance fraud.

During his LAPD career, he made a name for himself with side businesses as a security consultant and by renting out luxury cars to music artists and celebrities.

LA's leadership puts a stop to more housing while simultaneously launching a raid on a massive homeless encampment

Duplexes!

The area was already destroyed!:
Palisades residents have raised alarms about SB 9, worrying that their historically single-family-home community would be transformed by the additional density allowed under the law and become more dangerous in the event of future fires

USC says its deficit is more than $200 million

LAT:

“experiencing significant shifts in federal support” for its research and other programs

...

USC’s expenses have “significantly outpaced” its revenue for several years.

...

In interviews, two university employees acknowledged how grave the federal funding losses could be — but they also cited several pricey projects that they believe have hurt USC’s finances. Those endeavors include the construction of the Bloom Football Performance Center, which broke ground in November; the installation of enhanced security measures in the aftermath of spring 2024 protests over Israel’s war in Gaza; and the opening of the university’s Capital Campus in Washington, D.C., in 2023.

Football team has gotten worse every season under Lincoln Riley:

7-6

8-5

11-3 (with terrible bowl loss)

Cinematic bust of a “South American crime ring”

Terse LAT story, with hopefully a longer write-to come:

The group, which [LA's District Attorney] described as a “South American crime ring,” is accused of stealing more than $1 million in goods from Bidrussian Jewelry in Glendale on May 26 after cutting a hole in the roof, according to a news release issued by the Los Angeles County district attorney’s office.

Last week, the same group was in the process of carrying out a similar break-in at Rodeo Jewelers in La Verne when they were interrupted by officers from five different police agencies

The LA Times posted some advice articles for people who lost their homes to the fires

He lost everything in a wildfire. Here’s one city councilman’s practical advice:
don’t wait to find temporary housing. “As soon as you get stabilized somewhere,” he advised, “start calling apartments.” And if it’s unfurnished, make do with used or donated items.
...
He was glad he purchased his new home from a “mass builder” — a developer that goes through the permitting and legal process, then offers buyers a range of floor plans and options — rather than going it alone with an individual architect and builder.

Beautiful photo of Los Angeles on a foggy day

My review of the new Clippers arena is the app you have to use for everything logged me out twice during the evening

1. I'm sure it's the same at many venues that use digital ticketing, but it's a significant effort to make sure everyone in your group has installed and set up the app, send each person their ticket, and make sure each person has correctly accepted the ticket

2. The facial and car recognition systems only sort of work: (1) the facial system worked, but the workers assumed customers didn't set it up correctly, and stopped each person entering the facial scan line to make them pull out their phone and confirm they had set it up properly; (2) they checked the phones of each driver to confirm parking reservations

3. The entrance to the Intuit Dome you look at while waiting in line is ugly and boring--the second photo below:

(There's a screensaver on a giant screen to the left, but it's not in view while facing the stadium).

4. The food is acceptable: there was nothing I'd look forward to having again, or that felt unique or adventurous, or that was pleasingly-priced

5. Each chair has its own charging port, remember to bring a USB-C

6. I can't really judge traffic in the immediate area because it was fairly low attendance, but it was a lot more straightforward to reach from the freeway than Dodger Stadium or Crypto.

I'm not sure what I was expecting, but it seemed pretty unambitious and unimaginative in light of Ballmer's wealth and the opportunity. Other than the facial recognition, it was hardly different from the experience of going to a decades-old arena to watch a game.

"Clippers and Rams owners come out against Inglewood people mover, as $2.4-billion project falters"

LAT:

The $2.4-billion elevated rail line that Inglewood Mayor James Butts hoped to have open ahead of the 2028 Olympics is supposed to glide over the city’s downtown and lure tourists.

...

Congresswoman Maxine Waters, another early supporter, recently opposed the “boondoggle” saying it wasn’t worth the money.

...

“We do not plan to give any land for free,” said ... a senior project manager for [the owners of the Clippers and Rams]. “Why? Because it threatens the future development. It threatens our parking. It threatens everything about these businesses.”

Apparent arsonist threatens to keep burning houses if not paid blackmail in crypto

Edmonton:

A central Edmonton community is on edge after a home was destroyed in an apparent arson — with notes left on neighbouring properties demanding money.

The fire is one of two in central Edmonton in the past month that police have deemed suspicious.

Related, last night in Los Angeles:

Several vehicles and a business in the San Fernando Valley were severely damaged by flames in what investigators believe may be arson.

The fires occurred between 10 p.m. Sunday and 2 a.m. Monday along Ventura Boulevard in Sherman Oaks.

...

Last year around this time, an arsonist was arrested in the same area. Investigators do not believe the same person is responsible for these fires.

The LA Times asks whether anything can stop the "surf gang" at Lunada Bay in Southern California

(I posted about the intimidation tactics almost a decade ago.)

The new article is about a legal settlement and whether it will bring change:

The culture of localism runs deep in Palos Verdes Estates, a tight-knit, wealthy community with around 13,300 residents and its own police department. In fact, maintaining local control of the coastline was one of the reasons residents voted to establish their own city in 1939, according to historical news articles.

...

The Bay Boys’ reign has sparked years of controversy and emerged as a flash point for beach access in the upscale community of Palos Verdes Estates, culminating with a landmark lawsuit demanding the city do more to protect surfers from harassment.

The city agreed to settle the suit last month with a promise to protect public access to Lunada Bay. Additionally, 11 alleged surf gang members agreed to either pay steep fines or stay away from the break for a year.

...

The recently settled lawsuit was filed against Palos Verdes Estates and a dozen alleged Bay Boys members, alleging that the surf gang’s behavior and the city’s failure to uphold public beach access violated the California Coastal Act.

Dodgers pitcher Walker Buehler robbed of luxury watch at Santa Anita Park in Los Angeles

Initial reports were it was a $100,000 watch, but seems like that's been edited from the story:

ABC7 learned a mob of people surrounded Buehler and his wife . . . . That's when someone allegedly unbuttoned his shirt sleeve and took the watch.

Here's the LATimes quoting his management company:

“While walking from the paddock to their seats, Walker was unknowingly the victim of a snatch and grab robbery of his watch. The incident was reported to police and is currently under investigation.

Also in the LATimes's write-up:

According to Arcadia police, officers responded at approximately 5:30 p.m. to investigate three separate reports of grand theft. Two of the robberies occurred while the victims were surrounded by a large crowd of people. The third incident involved three people approaching the victim, with one suspect attempting to embrace the victim while another removed the watch.

...

“Based on the initial investigation, it appears all three victims were targeted by different, organized groups of people

I didn't see an article address whether such crimes are commonplace at the racetrack, or if there was something unusual about that day.
