"Marine Corps Officials Recommend Charges in Death of Muslim Recruit"

WSJ:
Mr. Siddiqui fell three stories to his death in what the military classified as a suicide. New details emerging from the investigations indicate Mr. Siddiqui leapt from the balcony of a barracks building after he was slapped in the face by the drill instructor, according to Marine officials.

Investigators found that the same drill instructor involved in Mr. Siddiqui’s case was already under investigation for the alleged mistreatment of another Muslim recruit last year.

In 2015, months before Mr. Siddiqui arrived at Parris Island, the drill instructor had harassed a recruit who wasn’t a direct charge, waking him up after hours and demanding he do push-ups, high-knee exercises and crunches in a shower, then forcing him to lie face down under running water, according to Marine officials familiar with the investigation.

The drill instructor then forced that recruit into a large, front-loading clothes dryer in the laundry room, according to officials. At one point, he accused the recruit of helping perpetrate the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks and then switched on the machine, causing the 6-foot, 157-pound recruit to spin around inside, an investigation of the 2015 incident found.
