Sri Lanka is one of the homes of Tropical Modernism, an architectural style that started in the mid-twentieth century, blending big blocks of monolithic concrete with lush tropical plants to blur the boundaries between inside and out. If you want to see other great epicentres of this ‘Jetsonsy’ approach to living, you need to get to Rio, LA, Miami and, of course, Singapore. But perhaps the most important, and least well known, pioneers of these ideas started in Sri Lanka. If you want to know more, google ‘Geoffrey Bawa’. He’s the Anglo Sri lankan father of the movement, whose houses I have always wanted to see. 📷: @hardingboutiquehotels #srilanka #boutiquehotels #tropicalmodernism #bawa #coconutpalms #staircase #modernism #ahangama #hardingboutiquehotels A post shared by
