The reason a lot of non-pedophile conservative Christians don't bat an eye when this keeps happening is that due to their media diet they believe it happens at the same rate among non Christian leaders so the narrative is "there's pedophiles lurking everywhere! even sadly, and rarely, in our midst"

Everyone knows the laziest way to get someone to stay in a community they're pretty unhappy with is to convince them that the "outside world" is even worse, and it's pretty telling how bad the inside must be that the "outside world" myths need to be so over-the-top (hellhole cities, occult cabals)
