Today's news and jokes

(Somehow driving a Japanese car is going to be patriotic)

"Australia’s longest waterway is under such dire threat of collapse that the entire lower Murray River ecosystem, which stretches nearly 1000 kilometres from western NSW, through Victoria and to the sea in South Australia has been classified as critically endangered." www.smh.com.au/politics/fed...

CBS's write-up

(Apparently, the only thing the administration won't leave to AI is document review)

Some people are surprised by this but the Right has always loathed the TSA because they are essentially security guards, so they're not in the cop clan, and are a lot more diverse than the cops (federal employment protections and unions make that moreso)...

@cnn A crowd confronted federal agents attempting to enter a Minneapolis pizza restaurant. The owners aren't sure why their restaurant was targeted. CNN has reached out to the Department of Homeland Security for more information on the incident. #CNN #News #Minneapolis #BorderPatrol ♬ original sound - CNN

Dear neighbor, It’s become common practice for ICE to stage its operations at the Target parking lot on East Lake Street. While immigration officials tear families apart, Target corporation is silent and makes its workers and customers feel unsafe. 1/

As the Council Member who represents this area, I am calling on Target to speak up, take action to make its parking lot and stores safe, and to be on the right side of history. 2/

(Quoting this)

If anyone was still pretending this isn’t just about excluding trans kids from public life, the Trump administration just opened a Title IX investigation into a Maine school district because a trans student is on a *co-ed* cheerleading squad.

— Molly White (@molly.wiki) January 15, 2026 at 5:09 PM
("The school was 'surprised' to learn of the investigation because there is no record of a complaint about the cheerleading program and it is co-ed activity where no one is cut from the squad")

is it normal for encyclopedias to include “skin tone” or just when they’re generated by a white nationalist’s ai?

It seems to me that if you're trying to figure out if originalism is a really deep and consistent commitment of the originalist Justices or is something that gets trotted out from time to time as needed, today's opinion in Case v. Montana is a data point clearly for the latter.

I had to look up Lizardman's Constant: the 4% of people who will tell a pollster lizard people are taking over the world, ie the minimum answer you will get for even the most absurd question.

This seems like a maliciously put headline to make people feel a certain way. Wikipedia is not partaking in generative AI. They are making AI companies and scrappers having to pay for training their modules off wikipedia texts. And having an AI (not that ai) tasked with updating dead links.

[After two glasses of wine at every dinner party] Hey did you know comic books imposed self-censorship to avoid government intervention so for like thirty years Superman comics stopped being about punching bad guys and instead he’d be like IF I DON’T EAT ALL THESE PIES JIMMY WILL TURN INTO A CLOCK!
