Bob Costas was 18 when his father dropped dead at JFK airport. At the wake, a man handed him a thick envelope with $6,000 in $100 bills. It was everything his father left behind, and a bookie would never have paid it to a dead man. In the video below, he tells the story himself. His father, John, was a big-time gambler. Not casinos, not racetracks. Ball games. Bob says the mortgage was literally riding on his bets. When the games went the wrong way, he threw things, cursed and yelled. Bob’s mom and sister would leave. Bob stayed, because watching the games with his dad was the only way to be close to him. Friday, May 15, 1970. A cop knocks on the door. Before he says a word, Bob’s mother asks, “My husband’s dead, isn’t he?” John Costas had a heart attack walking through JFK. He was 42. At the wake, one of his gambling buddies walked in with the envelope. “Your father was up when he died. Give this to your mother.” A bookie never pays a dead man, so the friend went to the bookie himself and said John sent him to collect. Decades later, Bob Costas refused to read sports betting ads on air. Today the bookie lives in everyone’s phone. Is that progress?

@sfchronicle Last one night in the Eastern Sierra town of Lone Pine, Cayden Thompson was hanging out on his friend’s front porch when the two men noticed a pair of what he described as “incredibly bright” beams of light shining down thousands of feet from the mountains near Mount Whitney into the low-slung desert below. Thinking that perhaps the beams came from a car that had driven off the side of a winding road and that someone might need help, Thompson and his friend drove up the slopes west of town, toward the light source. “We wanted to investigate,” he said. Motoring up the switchbacks on Horseshoe Meadows Road, the men got to within about 1,000 feet of the lights and stopped. A pair of high-wattage spotlights, connected to a generator, had been stationed in a dirt pullout on the roadside and pointed downward, illuminating a swath of the distant desert landscape south of town thousands of feet below. A technician manning the spotlights warned Thompson and his friend not to get too close. “They put out so much energy that you can’t stand in front of them or you’d get burned,” Thompson said. “It was pretty unbelievable.” The two locals would come to learn that the lights belonged to an L.A. tech company that was conducting a kind of experiment near their hometown that night. Saw the clip where Travis Hunter explains how he “fake stumbles” when undercutting a route to trick QBs into throwing the ball - he says he intentionally squats low and leans over looking off center to make it seem like he tripped or got caught slipping on a route. Went back and realize he did it to CJ Stroud on the EndZone interception and Stroud realizes what happened immediately. https://t.co/Y9EKtxGsBO
