Today's news and jokes

("was the first to announce Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco’s plan to seize 650,000 ballots, after working with the citizens group that raised doubts about the ballots.... a 67-year-old attorney, was appointed by the Shasta County supervisors last April. He lived in Florida then, had no previous ties to the area and had never run an election.")

A strange and confusing tale from the bowels of (where else) the New York Times. Has the American Medical Association changed position on trans youth care? A New York Times headline says they "endorsed restrictions" on youth surgeries. Other outlets, including NPR, report they did no such thing.

The Times's coverage of Feb. 3 and 4 accurately reported the public statements of both the American Society of Plastic Surgeons and the American Medical Association. Our reporting also accurately contextualized the shift from both of these organizations regarding gender-related surgical procedures.

The American Medical Association directly responds to New York Times coverage mischaracterizing their posiiton on gender affirming care for trans young people. cloud.e.ama-assn.org/newsletter?u...

(I'm certainly noting which outlets are covering the story)

@cnn A viral video showed a group of dogs in China who were purportedly captured to be eaten, escaped, and made the long journey home. The problem? The story's not real. CNN's Jessie Yeung explains how this kind of misinformation can spread. #cnn #news ♬ original sound - CNN

@springsgazette 35 teams are competing in the FIRST Robotics Competition this weekend. Each year, FIRST Robotics introduces a new game that challenges students to design and build robots for a specific purpose. The robots take the field in qualifying matches on Saturday, and teams that advance will compete in the finals on Sunday. FIRST Colorado also hosts other state programs, including FIRST Lego League and FIRST Tech Challenge. This year’s game, Rebuilt, has teams collecting balls called “fuel” and scoring points by launching them into a central hub — much like shooting a basketball into a hoop. Students control the robots during matches, while mounted cameras and an elaborate field of tags help position the robots and set their targets. Hundreds of high school students from Colorado, Wyoming, Arizona, Hawaii, Louisiana, Idaho, Taiwan, and Mexico will also be working on their robots between matches and presenting to judges about their team, design, and season. Historically held at the University of Denver’s ice arena, this year’s regional competition debuts at Coronado High School as the Pikes Peak Regional, with a future regional planned in Denver later this year. #coloradosprings #colorado #denver #firstrobotics #robotics ♬ Build Your Dreams - FASSounds
