Michigan is considering repealing a 1931 law that threatens unmarried couples living together with a year in jail

Senate Bill 56 strikes from Michigan law the idea that an unmarried man and woman living together are inherently committing lewd and lascivious behavior. Under that 1931 law, a couple found guilty could be jailed for no more than a year or fined up to $1,000.


Michigan’s senators voted Wednesday to repeal [the] law . . . – a move half of all Republicans in the chamber objected.


[One Democrat], rose to defend her bill, albeit somewhat incredulously.
